The new owners of this historic and much beloved cottage in Brunswick Heads wanted a garden that packed pockets of beauty into every cranny outdoor space.
The official brief was:

“contained ramshackle”
and we’re are counting the days until the garden's first spring, when bulbs and perennials start to deliver the ramshackle element of the brief.

Curvy garden beds soften the straight lines of the old house, while unfussy building materials keep the design grounded and approachable.

...

The planting experiments with varieties of grasses and flowering perennials usually found in colder climates, featuring a select few that we've tested against the inevitable rains and humidity of the Northern Rivers. The extra soil prep and care will be well worth the pops of seasonal joy in the sunny front garden.

"With only a limited brief from us, Kaihla had almost full reign in the landscape design and plant selection on our project, and we couldn’t be happier with the process and result. She has brought our yard to life, giving each area a unique personality, that is both functional and beautiful. "
- Jan, owner at Exeter Cottage

E + M'S GARDEN
2025
LOCATION
Bangalow, NSW
MATERIALS USED

PLANTING PALETTE
Endemic coastal species, mixed with humidity-hardy flowering perennials

E & M came to us soon after purchasing their home in Bangalow, needing a quick and thoughtful solution for their non-compliant pool fencing. The site offered plenty of charm but came with its challenges, like tight access, tricky drainage, and several ageing retaining walls that
needed replacement.

The steeply sloping block became a canvas for imagination, for both us and the clients, as we worked together to develop a brief that would not only resolve these issues but also spark joy. Inspired by photos from their travels and countless episodes of Gardening Australia, they envisioned a garden that captured the feeling of Spain - warm, textured, and abundant but firmly rooted on this continent by the use of Australian natives. They were drawn to gnarled trunks, fruiting trees, and native bush tucker,
while also gravitating toward the looser, naturalistic look of cool-climate
prairie plantings.

Our task was to weave these desires together into one cohesive landscape. We found space for everything: a productive vegetable garden, a soft-edged prairie planting, an orchard, and a pool area that now blends seamlessly into its surroundings. The result is a series of connected outdoor rooms, each distinct yet flowing naturally into the next, with planting that softens boundaries and invites exploration.

The project was brought to life by Streatscapes Landscape Construction, who did an exceptional job navigating the steep inclines, narrow access, and the complexities of working around the existing pool and structures.

Words From The Owners
"Thank you so much for all your hard work. The garden is amazing and will delight us for years to come. You are lovely people, and it is a pleasure knowing you. "
